A Very Hipster Meal

 Portland, OR

People are going to think I work here!

Canard

This afternoon we went to Canard for happy hour and dinner.  It's been in Portland for about 10 years and is VERY Hipster.  The food is fantastic and the place fills up at opening.  They do a Chef's (read hipster) version of White Castle Burgers and sell them for $4 during happy hour.  We went for the burgers and stayed for the rest of the food.

That look when vacation keeps going and going and going.

I had a $3 Montucky Cold Snack to start off the hipster experience.

I also took advantage of the $2 oysters.

We split a delicious beef tar tar

And we spit a Duck Stack (not to be confused with this NSFW link), which was described as a Chef's Biscuits and Gravy.  It was amazingly delicious.  We got the optional Foie Gras topper as well.

I was so excited for the sliders that I didn't take a photo.  If you want to see them you can check out someone else's photo here.  They were awesome and I mentioned that I am glad I don't live upstairs to Donna while eating them.  They were well worth the $4 happy hour price.

That's it for today.  If you missed, Another Tiki Bar, check it out.  We went to another tiki bar!

Another Tiki Bar

 Portland, OR

Hale Pele

This afternoon we took the bus to Hale Pele, one of our favorite tiki bars.  Hale Pele, we learned, is owned by the same group that owns Smugglers Cove, one of our other favorite tiki bars.  We got there just before opening and joined the line.  We were seated at the bar and within a few minutes the bar was full.  We went on a Sunday and this is the day that Members get a 20% discount so that explained why it was full almost immediately after opening.

Before heading to Hale Pele we went for a walk along the riverfront.  We caught the Amtrak coming across The Iron Bridge.

Someone put up fun warning and danger signs.

Everyone is excited to get their tropical vibes going on this cold day.

Our bartender at work

I chose am In From The Cold for my first drink.

They still have their 10th anniversary swizzle sticks from 2022.  We got a few.

We also got some good snacks.  Their food is some of the best food we have had at a tiki bar.

I chose Abuela's Old Fashion for my 2nd drink.

After enjoying Hale Pele we took the bus home.  They have red interior lights at night when the bus is in motion and it looks cool on the security camera.

The 2nd Oldest Tiki Bar in The US

 Portland, OR

Donna has her Alibi for the evening

The Alibi Tiki Lounge

Today we took the Yellow Line to The Alibi.  We have been here before but it has been a long time.  The Alibi opened in 1947 and has changes little since opening.  It isn't the premier tiki bar to visit in Portland but it is a comfortable place to have a drink and the food is some of the best food at a tiki bar that we have had.  Someone on Reddit said this, "There are better dive bars. There are better karaoke bars. There are better tiki bars. But there is no better dive-karaoke-tiki bar than the Alibi!"

The Black light Murals are raised so they have a great 3D look to them.

This area of the bar was closed mid day.  You can see the 2nd bar on the right and the karaoke stage in the back.

I got the Singapore Sling.

Donna's drink

They also have good beers on tap because Portland.

I ordered off the menu for my 2nd drink.  She made me a daiquiri with Doctor Bird Jamaica Rum.  It was fantastic.

Sometime in the last 75 years or so this hula girl lost her arm.

There is also a patio but it was a cold rainy day so I didn't check it out.

This is their current merch but they are getting new merch for their upcoming anniversary in July.

The Alibi is a great tiki bar to visit when you are in Portland.  If you want a nice quiet drink like us, visit mid day.  If you want a more lively visit with karaoke, go at night. Either way, I am sure you will have a good time.

That's it for today.  If you missed, Jaws Launch Party and Tournament, check it out.

Jaws Launch Party and Tournament

 Happy Valley, OR

Today we went to Lardo for lunch with Francis.  We had to sit on the patio and it was cold but the sandwich was great!

Jaws Launch Party

Tonight I did the 45 minute drive to Happy Valley, OR for a Stern Jaws Launch Party.  Jaws has been available for about a month in limited places but now it is starting to show up all over the place.  Sometimes places celebrate receiving their machine with a launch party.  The launch party consists of a tournament and usually giveaways.  Sometimes people dress up and there are usually other surprises so it's a pretty fun experience.

People arrived early to practice and pay up for the tournament which was $5.  They also had Jaws playing on loop which was fun.

You can see the Translight and the 1st place trophy as well as some coasters, stickers, one sheets for Jaws Pinball, and the 3-D glasses that can be used with Jaws.  There is a way to turn on some sort of 3-D feature which seems like a gimmick to me.

They also had Narragansett beer which is the beer Quint drinks in the movie.  I had to get one.

It was a fun tournament.  I could have played better but I finished just above the top 1/2.  My goal these days is 1/3rd.  I had some spots I could have played better but oh well.

I did get my Jaws Launch Party Badge which is cool.

I also got my best score on Jaws and won my round on the machine vs a very good player.

We are seeing a lot of cold rain here in Portland.  It's the first time it has really felt like winter for us this season.  Last winter we had some very cold days so it was nice to avoid that this season.  I am looking forward to spring.
