Day 3 of Folklorama - Metis

 Winnipeg, MB

Hanging with the Winnipeggers!

The Forks Market

This morning we walked to The Forks Market to check it out and play some pinball at Phantom Amusement.  The market has some shops and food stands.  It's a cool place.  They even have a bar with craft beer.  Donna and I split a cinnamon roll from the bakery and bought some bread after playing some pinball.

We saw Richardson's Ground Squirrels on our walk there.  They were pretty much Prairie Dogs.

The Path of Time Sculpture

Forks Market

There was an Indigenous Peoples store that sold some cool things

Even moccasins made from various hides.

Folklorama Metis

This evening we went to the Metis Festival during Folklorama.  The Metis people are an Indigenous people from the area.  The word metis or metisse in French means mixed.  The Metis people are a mix of early Europeans and Indigenous peoples going back to the early 1600s.  Their culture formed in the, now, Winnipeg / Red River area and they are keeping their culture alive through dance and the arts.

At the beginning of the show they talked about how Canada banned Indigenous people's dance in the 1850s until 1951 so the Metis people adapted their dance to have very little upper body movement so they could dance inside and when seen through windows, it looked like they were just walking around.  I would describe the dance today as heavily influenced by Square Dancing and Clogging.  It was all very entertaining and the food was very good.

We wanted better seats tonight so we got there before opening and queued up.

It was held at a neighborhood curling club.

The food line was well organized.

Part of our food with the Metis flag in the background.

I noticed my beer cup was made of recycled pet.  I wonder which kinds of pets were used.

Louis Riel was a Canadian Politician and a political leader of the Metis people.

Here is their audition for Canada's Got Talent.  They ended up winning according to the person telling us about it at the festival.

That's it for today.  If you missed Day 2 of Folklorama - India check it out.
