The Inner Harbor and a Free Ferry Ride

 Baltimore, MD

Donna enjoying a free ferry ride

Inner Harbor

Baltimore, like all great cities, has water access.  The Inner Harbor is the famous harbor in Baltimore which is part of the Patapsco River, a fresh non-tidal water system that connects with the Potomac River and others and then flows into the Chesapeake Bay and ultimately into the Atlantic Ocean. It is a very touristy area so we decided to go walk around it and then take the ferry associated with the Charm City Circulator across the harbor.

You can rent Electric Paddle Boats in the shape of Dragons or Pirate Ships.

Baltimore and Maryland have a very tight connection with Washington D.C. and the east coast.  Maryland was one of the states that lost citizens on 9/11, 68 according to this site.  These are steel girders from the World Trade Center honoring the lost there.

These are Marble Slabs from The Pentagon honoring the Marylanders lost there on 9/11

This monument honored the 3 Marylanders that died on Flight 93.

The National Aquarium sits on the Inner Harbor which forms a an important habitat zone.  An example of 3 different habitats seen in Maryland is represented near the Inner Harbor.

The small map shows the 3 habitats.

We learned all of the major ferns that grew in Western Washington when we were there.  Time to learn the Maryland ferns.

A friend of mine does "Font Crimes" posts and this reminds me of a crime he would call out.

The ducks on the edge of the fountain can't read the "Do Not Dolphins Only Enter" sign.

We found one of the "water taxi" stops on Pier 5 so we rode it there.  It took us across the Inner Harbor to Federal Hill.  The pilot was very nice, recognized we were visiting, and gave us some good advice on things to see on Federal Hill.

This guy loves public transit and loves Free Boat Rides even more!

It was a really beautiful day

If you visit there are also paid ferries that run.  Don't get on one of them!  They cost $20 a day.

The ferry pilot told us about this monument which memorializes The Baltimore Pride sinking where 4 people lost their lives.  We assumed it was an old monument like every other monument in the area.

Nope, the boat sank in 1986. Not that old by our standards.

This is The American Visionary Arts Museum.  We are going soon.

This is on the actual Federal Hill in Federal Hill Park.

This is the Federal Hill Neighborhood

Cross St. Market is a large indoor market

$4.50 Natty Bo!  I'll be back!

That was it for today.  It was a really nice loop walk around the area.  Every day we get to know Baltimore a little better.  If you missed yesterday's post you can see it here.
