Pinball, Lunch, and A Beer Bar in the Crossroads Arts District

 Kansas City, MO

Heading out for an afternoon in The Crossroads Arts District

Kansas City Crossroads Arts District

Today we have reservations at GrĂ¼nauer, a Austrian restaurant and we also reserved a Stelze (3lb Pork Shank).  They have a limited number of these on Sundays and they say you can reserve one with your reservation so we did.  More on this later!

Our adventure began on The KC Streetcar.  It took us and many others down Main St. and we got off at The Crossroads Arts District Station.  The Crossroads is a popular place for art and entertainment especially on the first Friday of the month during the summer.  On First Fridays we hear it gets a bit wild.  We missed out on that so we are exploring it on the Second Sunday (sounds just as cool as First Friday right?).  Our first stop is Up-Down KC again.  I found 4 tokens in my pocket so I wanted to use them up.  We stopped by the bar and the bar tender said, "Hi, You're back again".  I guess we stick out.  Not sure if it is because we are older than the normal crowd or our attire doesn't fit in.  There have been quite a few occasions where it's clear the person we are talking to knows we aren't from the area right away.  We each ordered a Bell's Beer and got $2 worth of tokens.

We started with Metallica

I also noticed they were playing Strange Brew which was pretty cool.  I had to text a photo to Bob (we hung out with him in Colorado a few times, one being here) showing we had Pinball and Strange Brew in the same place!

I was impressed by this giant X-Men machine too

I used to play this Indiana Jones game in the breakroom at Disneyland

After a few rounds of pinball and a game of Centipede it was time to walk to our lunch.  We ended up with 3 tokens this time so I think we will be back.

We walked through the neighborhood to The Freight House where GrĂ¼nauer is located.  We were taken to our table and got familiar with the menu.  We didn't really need to because we had pre ordered the Stelze!  We ordered our drinks and let the server know we had a Stelze waiting for us.

They had merch

I had to wait patiently

Donna got Der Schmutzgie - Black pepper/mustard Vodka with Pickle brine, kraut juice and beet juice, garnished with cornichons and served up.  It was fantastic IMHO.

I took a photo of the drink so I could remember what was in it.

Our crispy shank came on a platter with 2 people to cut it up for us.  It seemed like our server was just as excited as we were.  She had said she had never had it and was getting a lesson in carving it.  She was also excited about Donna's drink.

Look at this terrific plate of food!

Lunch was the best meal we have had on our trip thus far.  I mentioned in this post that BBQ was great but it wasn't our favorite preparation for meat.  This far surpassed any BBQ in our opinion.  It made us look forward to dining in Germany when we are in EPCOT in January.

After our amazing meal we walked through The Crossroads again to Oak and Steel KC.  Josh (our Brother-in-law) recommended this place so I looked at it and they had a few beers I wanted to try.

We were right behind the Train Yards so I was able to get this gif of a train going by with public art in the foreground (and a car backing out).

This is us after being 110% satisficed with our meal and we have leftovers

We walked by Up-Down again

Oak and Steel had a cool mural on the wall that represented Kansas City.  I ended up buying a T-shirt from them with this design.

That's me!

They also had an amazing Kreik Beer by Diametric Brewing Lab in Lee's Summit, MO

It was a short walk to The KC Streetcar and a short ride back to the apartment.  It was a great afternoon exploring The Crossroads Arts District. If you missed yesterday's post you can find it here.
