Back to The Art Institute for Dali and Contemporary Art

 Chicago, IL

What's going on here?  We are riding an escalator with a Barbara Kruger Mural behind us.

The Art Institute of Chicago for Members Only Hour

Today we went back to the Art Institute for the member hour.  It was awesome and worth every penny we spent.  We had the whole museum to ourselves except for the Dali exhibit which closes next week. We spent a bit of time in the Dali exhibit but we have been to the Dali Museum in St. Petersburgh FL so we didn't feel the need to get full value from it.  We will continue to go back for member hour as often as we can.

Sky Above the Clouds IV- Georgia O'Keeffe

Autumnal Cannibalism - Salvador Dali

Untitled (Dream of Venus) - Salvador Dali

Formation of the Monsters - Salvador Dali
This is cool because it shows the work that goes into planning his paintings.

Inventions of the Monsters - Salvador Dali

Soft Construction with Boiled Beans - Salvador Dali

Three Young Surrealist Women Holding in Their Arms the Skins of an Orchestra - Salvador Dali

I really liked how you could see the edge of the canvass in this work and the way they framed it.

Two Figures - Barbara Hepworth

Greyed Rainbow - Jackson Pollock
I have seen this image many times in print while playing Masterpiece (the boardgame).  The card didn't really show how colorful the lower left of the painting is and seeing it in person was really awesome.  My photo kind of shows it.

Donna caught me starting at the painting and taking my photos

Number 19 - Mark Rothko

Excavation - Willem de Kooning

Starry Night and the Astronauts - Alma Thomas
The color in this photo isn't going to be right.  The wall is white but I couldn't get my phone to register it as white for some reason.

American Collectors - David Hockney
Donna introduced me to David Hockney on one of our early dates.  This is the first Hockney we have seen on our trip.

Woman with Dog - Katherina Fritsch

Red Yellow Blue White and Black II - Ellsworth Kelly

Donna took this photo to show how empty the museum was in this area during the member hour.

Woman III - Roy Lichtenstein

Still - Damien Hirst
Donna looking at a piece inspired by David Cronenberg's Dead Ringers, a movie we recently rewatched.

Foot Meditation - Roy Lichtenstein

Christ and the Lamb - Jeff Koonz

Liz #3 - Andy Warhol
Yes, that Liz, Elizabeth Taylor

Four Mona Lisas - Andy Warhol

A whole room of Warhol's

As you can see I am well behind the safety line.

The Key - Jackson Pollock

Painting (Figures with Stars) - Joan Miro'
We recently found out this male artist isn't pronounced Joan but rather Juan.  He has a museum dedicated to him in Barcelona

My museum selfie for today.

Time Tranfixed - Rene' Magritte
Sometimes you see a painting you don't recognize but you say in your head, "this is an important painting".  That's what happened with this painting.

Midday Sorrow - 'Angel Planells

Self-Portrait - Max Beckmann
We saw a whole room of Max Beckmann in St. Louis

Daisies - Henri Matisse

Nude Under a Pine Tree - Pablo Picasso

The Red Armchair - Pablo Picasso

Painterly Realism of a Football Player - Color Masses in the 4th Dimension - Kazimir Malevich

Lozenge Composition with Yellow, Black, Blue, Red, and Gray - 'Piet Mondrian

This is us going to the Exclusive Members Only (not the jacket) Café'

The coffee was free but the beer cost money.

The café offered good views from the roof.

Maquette for "Constellation" - Santiago Calatrava
We hope to see the real thing at River Point Park

America Windows - Marc Chagall

Navy Pier

After the museum we walked over to Navy Pier.  We were close and we thought we should take a look at least once.  Once was enough.  It's a lot like Fisherman's Warf, crowded and touristy.

The walk there was the most interesting part.

We rode a bus to The L to end our adventure.  Our transit pass is really paying off.

That was our day today.  If you missed Outsider Art Museum, Tiki, and Tiki check it out.
