Checking Out a Local Brewery & Maryland's State Symbols

 Baltimore, MD

Checkerspot Brewing is about half a mile from our place

Checkerspot Brewing

Today is a cold rainy day so we are taking it easy.  We did some chores and did some future trip planning and then walked to Checkerspot Brewing.  It's named after The Baltimore Checkerspot Butterfly which is Maryland's State Insect.  The brewery was right next to the railroad tracks so we were able to watch various trains go by.  We saw the 3:30 MARC heading back to D.C. and we watched a few freight trains go by.  The Orioles game was on too.  There were quite a few fans there watching the game.

They have their own official street sign

This stout was awesome.  I have had stouts brewed with Oyster shells but not Crab shells.  We also liked the logo, using a pint glass, hops, and barley to make a butterfly.

The Baltimore Checkerspot

The rest of the night we watched YouTube videos of Baton Rouge and Memphis to get us hyped for our future stops.

Since we are at it, we can go through all of the official Maryland State Symbols;

State Exercise - Walking
State Boat - Skipjack
State Reptile - Diamondback Terrapin
State Cat - Calico Cat
State Crustacean - Blue Crab
State Flower - Black-Eyed Susan
State Dessert - Smith Island Cake
State Dance - Square Dance
State Sport - Jousting (what the???)
State Team Sport - Lacrosse
State Dinosaur - Astrodon Johnstoni
State Dog - Chesapeake Bay Retriever
State Gem - Patuxent River Stone
State Tree - White Oak
State Drink - Milk
State Horse - Thoroughbred Horse (is this even a breed?)

That's it for today.  If you missed yesterday's adventure you can read about it here.
